Youth Band

Established in 2002, Mountains Youth Band (MYB) is a community youth concert band and a division of Blue Mountains Concert Band Inc. MYB provides a quality concert band experience for young musicians in the Blue Mountains and surrounds, with dynamic leadership, competition opportunities and enrichment activities such as master classes.

Applications are now open for two scholarships in 2020, one for Percussion, the other for Low Brass.

Scholarships

MYB offers both professional performance through a joint annual concert with BMCB, and regular community service through performances at the Glenbrook Anzac Day ceremonies, school fairs, the Buckland Retirement Village concert and Glenbrook’s combined churches Carols in the Park.
MYB was the 2009, 2010 and 2015 Australian National Concert Band Competition Champion in the under 19 years C division. It has also gained second and third placings in the NSW Band Championships.

Membership is open to instrumentalists who:
a) Are 10 to 19 years of age
b) Have been playing for a minimum of two years OR have achieved AMEB Grade 1 or equivalent
c) Are undertaking, or are willing to commence, private lessons
Auditions are not required. MYB hold an annual open rehearsal for interested musicians.

Term fees attract family member discounts and performance shirts are hired through a one-off payment.

Each year Penrith City Council provides funding through the Community Assistance Program (CAP) for local non-profit organisations and groups to help provide services and facilities that will benefit the Penrith community. In 2018, Mountains Youth Band received $600 to go towards our 2019 Master Class for developing our young musicians.
The Blue Mountains City Council Community Assistance Program recognises the contribution community organisations make to the quality of life and well-being of the local community. For 10 years, Mountains Youth Band have received an annual donation through BMCC to develop the musicianship skills of our members. In 2018, we received $790 to go towards our 2018 Master Class.
Community Band Development Grants from Create NSW are administered by the Band Association of NSW Inc. For 10 years, Mountains Youth Band have received annual funding for development programs through these grants. In 2018, we received $1100 towards funding tutors for our 2018 Master Class.
