Drumming For Our Lives
Tonight we ended a long and quiet winter by drumming up some fantastic rhythms thanks to percussion tutor, Jacob Cook. Mountains Youth Band members started the evening with an hour of cross-rhythms using djembes, toms, tambourines and agogos. Then the unofficial “BMAD” gang took a turn – that is, the Blue Mountains Adult Drummers. We spent some time discovering the challenges of playing percussion but soon experienced the wonder of building up complex rhythmic structures, layer by layer. For a group more accustomed to blowing our instruments, we sounded pretty good, and I doubt that I was the only one driving home with a samba in my head!
It has been a tough year for musicians. Thanks everyone for coming along and re-connecting. May it be a sign of things to come.
